Company Background

The predecessor to Active Technologies, Scott Motor Company, was started in 1982 to design, manufacture, and market ferrite permanent magnet motors and associated controls. By 1987 the company was one of the nation's leading producers of boat auto pilot motors, tread mill motors, pulse-width modulated (PWM) controls and floor machine motors. The motor operations was sold in 1989 and Active Technologies was started to develop high performance rare earth alternators and controls. In 1995 Active Technologies was sold to Coleman Powermate.

Innovative Technology Developed

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) needed a lighter, lower cost, high-powered alternator for the military's Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV) and Drones. Using patented high-energy rare earth permanent magnet alternator and control technology, Active Technologies, successfully created a new generation of lightweight engine-driven generators. The lightweight charger/alternator is less than one cubic foot in volume and produces as much power as comparable units five times its size. The lightweight portable generators are used to charge a variety of vehicles that fail to start, from military trucks to small airplanes. Additionally, the unit provides 115 volts of AC power to operate emergency lights and to run power tools.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

Active Technologies, Inc. recognized the commercial market potential of a lightweight charger. The generators have been mass marketed to truck drivers, private aircraft and boat owners, and anyone else to whom a lightweight, portable charger would be of great value. The technology of lightweight alternators revolutionized the emergency generator industry. The generators, sold as the Lightning Charger, are found in Walmart, K-Mart, Builders Square, Home Depot, and other similar stores. Between 1994 and mid-year 1996, over $8 million worth of the generators were sold, and sales are expected to grow in the future. As a direct result of SBIR, the company has been sold and absorbed into Coleman Powermate, creating 80 new jobs in the process.
