Company Background

DSR was founded in 1982 with two employees as System Resources, a provider of structured system resource methodology for monitoring software development. Continued success and growth led to the incorporation of Digital System Resources in 1988; DSR employees now number about 170 and annual sales are approximately $30 million. DSR has offices in Fairfax, Orlando, and San Diego, specializing in providing innovative engineering services in system engineering, performance analysis/assessment, concept development, prototyping, algorithm development, software engineering, and system/software integration.

Innovative Technology Developed

A priority for the DoD is to support R&D innovations that provide cost-effective performance improvements by incorporating technology advancements into existing military infrastructure. DSR created a new Multipurpose Processor (MPP), adapting commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware for submarine combat system signal processing. The MPP has capitalized on exponential improvements in commercial hardware and software to facilitate rapid improvements in acoustic data processing. Fundamental to MPP is DSR’s companion product, Middleware, which protects the DoD’s investment in processor software through software transportability: the ability to transport new advanced software to existing hardware utilizing an open operating system that enables the software to run on any processor using the same operating system.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

DSR’s commercial success is primarily being realized through sales of these innovative products to the DoD. The cornerstone of the Navy’s Acoustic Rapid COTS Insertion (A-RCI) program is the rapid introduction of the MPP and Middleware. The Navy plans to install MPPs on most of its submarine fleet as the principal acoustic signal processor, and has already purchased $52 million of the processors to date. The benefit to the Navy has been a processor with 200 times the processing power at half the cost, and the ability to be continually upgraded to incorporate the latest technology without redesign. DSR anticipates strong sales of its technology to the Navy and military prime contractors in the future.
