Company Background

MIOX Corporation, of Albuquerque, NM, one of the fastest growing high-technology companies in the Rio Grande corridor, has made safe water supplies a corporate objective. MIOX has 30 employees and 45 distributors in 12 countries and on five continents. In conjunction with its parent company, Los Alamos Technical Associates, Inc. (LATA), MIOX has created and commercialized an extraordinarily simple process, which more effectively and safely disinfects water. MIOX was incorporated in 1994 and has installed hundreds of water purifying units worldwide. MIOX seeks to be the premier international supplier of on-site mixed oxidant generators for water disinfection in the 21st century.

Innovative Technology Developed

The U.S. Army sought simpler water purifying methods, which would be highly mobile and utilize relatively simple equipment and inputs to generate water in remote locations. Using the mixed oxidant process developed by LATA, MIOX developed a new process, using a membraneless electrolytic cell that generates a mixture of oxidants in solution from salt water made from common water softener salt. MIOX has commercialized the on site generation technology resulting in over 1000 commercial oxidant generators operating in water treatment plants in 45 states in the United States and 20 foreign countries. Installed MIOX capital equipment has a combined treatment capacity of over 1 billion gallons per day. The company's generators have been effectively used by the Army, on Navy ships, by the United Nations' Pan American Health Organization, and many others to purify water in difficult and remote environments.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

Because of the quality and reliability of MIOX's water purifying technology developed under SBIR, MIOX grew to $1.5 million in sales by the end of its second year in business (1995), and is expected to see over $ 10 million revenue in 2005. As a result of a follow on DARPA contract with Los Alamos Technical Associates involving MIOX and Mountain Safety Research, MIOX developed and commercialized the patented MSR MIOX Purifier - a 7-inch (18 cm), 3.5 oz. (99 g), simple, individual-use device that uses a small amount of electrical current and salt to produce a disinfectant substantially more effective than chlorine. In addition to sales to campers and other outdoors enthusiasts, MIOX has sold to the military 8,000 of these devices, about half of which are in use in Iraq and Afganistan.
