Company Background

Oceanit was started in Hawaii over 20 years ago with little more than $100. Today it is one of Hawaii's largest and most diversified science and engineering companies. Corporate focus areas include: aerospace, engineering, life sciences and information technology. Oceanit is constantly generating ideas and solutions that address some very big problems, ranging from the security of outer space to increasing human life expectancy.

Innovative Technology Developed

The technology resulted in a fully automated, networked system of multi-sensor, remote small telescopes to acquire, analyze, and catalog space-based assets. This Phase III SBIR award is the result of Oceanit's breakthrough work of very accurate space observations obtained using a low-cost telescope system. Typical uses for the system include tracking satellites and providing more precise orbital information. The system can provide data which, along with collateral information, can enable satellite owners to learn about potential collisions with nearby space objects or debris. The Oceanit system can track satellites as accurately as the Air Force's larger telescopes, which can now be utilized for more challenging tasks.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

Oceanit is currently commercializing the technology through the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) project entitled High Accuracy Networked orbit Determination System (HANDS). This $50M Phase III contract will deliver a network of optical ground stations. At the heart of each ground station is a small telescope, electronic sensors, and highly-specialized data reduction software. The sites will deliver high-accuracy position and characterization data on a host of man-made on-orbit objects, including deep space satellites, for the Directed Energy Directorate of AFRL. As part of the project, Oceanit will exploit the Air Forces' award-winning "Raven" small telescope technology. (Oceanit's Space Systems Division played an important role in the development of Raven.) The program paradigm is to deliver extraordinary results utilizing ordinary equipment. As such, the network of ground sites will be delivered with remarkably low cost, utilizing a large percentage of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components. The final "commercializable" product will be a wide variety of raw and reduced data products targeted at a broad base of end users in the Air Force, other DOD components, NASA, the intelligence community, and universities.
