Company Background

Precision Navigation, Inc. was founded in 1987 by a group of electrical engineers from Stanford University to develop and commercialize innovative sensor technologies for consumer, industrial, and military applications. These technologies are available for a wide variety of applications ranging from navigation to test measurement. The products and technology developed by Precision Navigation with SBIR-funding are widely used by the U.S. Army, as well as in many high profile commercial applications, such as compasses in GM, Ford, and Chrysler automobiles, Bayliner boats, Polaris jet skis, compass watches, and US Diver scuba.

Precision Navigation developed for the U.S. Army a technologically advanced magnetometer for use in a hand-held electronic compass. The company's magnetometers are well suited for portable electronic navigation and measurement instruments because they provide highly accurate magnetic field information, consume very little power, and are less expensive than alternative technologies. The Company subsequently used the same basic technology in its first consumer product, the Wayfinder™ Electronic Automobile Compass, introduced in 1991 and distributed worldwide.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

Products using Precision Navigation's SBIR-originated magnetometer technology have important competitive advantages in terms of performance, size, power consumption, features, and price. The company has received patents in the U.S. and abroad for its magnetometer and inclinometer circuitry. Since the introduction of its Wayfinder™ product, the company has produced six other advanced digital compasses for the consumer market.

In response to numerous inquiries, Precision Navigation introduced a new family of 3-axis electronic compass modules with tilt compensation and electronic interface for original equipment manufactures [OEM]. Precision Navigation also introduced the Vector series of low cost 2-axis compass modules for the OEM and hobbyist markets. Recently, the company made available its patented magneto-inductive sensors to high volume customers. Precision Navigation is continually improving existing products and developing new technologies, markets, and products. As a result of strong demand for its products, the company's ranks have grown from three in 1987 to 18 in 1998 and sales have grown from $250,000 to over $4 million annually.
