Company Background

ArmorWorks, Inc. was founded in 1996 as a high-tech armor protection development firm. The company has developed systems that are employed by both military and law enforcement systems around the world. ArmorWorks is not a materials producer; rather, the organization concentrates on armor design and production with a specialization in materials technology. ArmorWorks objectively evaluates and selects only those materials and systems that best suit the needs of their customers. The firm maintains that they use the latest generation ceramic and composite materials to construct armor systems and fully test their products to assure superior performance in a variety of environments.

Innovative Technology Developed

ArmorWorks has produced over 300,000 ceramic armor components for a variety of personnel armor, aircraft, and vehicle applications. Since 2000, ArmorWorks received two SBIR Phase II awards for composite armor research projects: the AAAV Multi-Threat Armor System and AAAV Composite Armor System.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

Technologies developed from both of the SBIR research efforts have been applied to the design of Small Arms Protective Inserts (SAPI) Body Armor Plates used in the Interceptor Vest currently being worn by U.S. service men and women in the Middle East. ArmorWorks has been awarded more than $50 million in contracts from the Army and Marines to produce SAPI plates for body armor, ensuring their status as the leading producer for the U.S. military. To date, the organization has produced over 350,000 SAPI plates for the Department of Defense. ArmorWorks also manufactures vehicle armor. The company's SBIR research was beneficial in the design of HMMWV and truck add-on armor kits currently in use in the Middle East. The vehicles armor produced by ArmorWorks has a number of critical features for the battefield, including easy installation (requires no vehicle modification or special tools, field configurable (contains simplified installation to allow for reconfiguration for specific missions).

Finally, the company recently was awarded another $30 million contract from the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency to produce and deliver Kevlar inserts to protect U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan against small arms fire.
