Chesapeake PERL (C-PERL) manufactures and purifies recombinant proteins for the commercial and government biotechnology markets. C-PERL's proprietary platform technology effectively utilizes baculovirus expression in whole insect larvae as "mini bioreactors". Their manufacturing facility is the world's most advanced, automated set-up for efficient mass-rearing of insects. The innovative automation allows production of high-quality complex recombinant proteins, scaleable from milligram to kilogram, and provides "mass customization" for recombinant protein manufacturing such that development time is greatly reduced. They specialize in antibodies, virus antigens, specialty enzymes, and kinins but can produce many classes of proteins with a very short lead-time.
Chesapeake PERL, Inc has transformed baculovirus-based expression in insect larvae from bench-scale into large-scale manufacturing with the development and utilization of oral tranfection technology. The technology platform consists of automated mass insect rearing, inoculation them orally with baculovirus containing the sequence for the recombinant protein of interest, and harvesting and recovery of the protein. This allows the development of "mass customization" for recombinant protein manufacturing in whole insect larvae without the typical scale-up issues inherent in other protein production platforms. The C-PERL advantage not only can reduce costs by nearly an order of magnitude but also speed product development.
Chesapeake PERL's number of employees has grown from 4 to 17 in three years. The Mass Customization Biomanufacturing Process Army SBIR project is the foundation of all the company's manufacturing business at this time and has resulted in an impressive pipeline of customers and potential customers.
