Company Background

Chesapeake Sciences Corporation (CSC) was founded in 1991 to design and manufacture electronic data acquisition systems for use in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), geophysical exploration, arms control verification, acoustic tracking applications, and seismic event detection. Revenues for 1998 reached over $24M. Significant growth is expected over the next several years due to a greater demand for our products by the geophysical exploration market and Chesapeake's selection by the United States Navy as the primary supplier of Towed Array Integrated Product Team (TAIPT) towed array telemetry systems. Chesapeake Sciences has been identified as a Washington Technology Fast 50 organization, ranking 24th overall for revenue growth over a five-year period.

Innovative Technology Developed

Chesapeake Sciences developed, qualified, and is currently producing, the common TAIPT telemetry. CSC leverages commercial network standards (ATM/SONET), components, and manufacturing processes to provide a cost-effective product for use in submarine, surface ship, and surveillance towed array systems.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

The TAIPT telemetry is being applied to towed sensors, hull mounted sensors, shipboard monitoring systems, acoustic ranges and acoustic intercept sensors including: TB-29A, TB 29A Twinline, TB-34, AN/SQQ-89(V)15A, Hull Array and Total Ship Monitoring (TSM). In addition derivatives of the TAIPT telemetry have been applied to geophysical applications for towed and bottom sensor systems. The commonality of TAIPT telemetry across all platforms saves procurement, training, and maintenance costs. The Navy has realized unit cost savings on the order of 40% compared to earlier telemetry systems. Significant life cycle cost savings are achieved by having a common array maintenance and repair activities for all towed arrays.
