InterSense, founded in 1996, is the market leader in miniaturized, inertial-based, precision motion tracking technology used with simulation, training and immersive display systems. InterSense's patented motion tracking products enable realistic interaction with computer graphics for a variety of applications, including simulation & training; oil & gas exploration; virtual prototyping & design; medical imaging; entertainment; and video/film production.
The IS-900 system, an improved position tracking system for immersive projection-based and head mounted displays, is a 6 degree of freedom motion (6-DOF) tracking system based on a hybrid technology of inertial and ultrasonic tracking. The position and orientation of the tracking stations are determined by the output of the accelerometers and gyros. Drift correction is accomplished using advanced Kalman filters which fuse the output of the inertial sensors with range measurements obtained from the ultrasonic components. The result is full 6-DOF data that is very smooth, precise, and free from jitter.
To date, there are over 1000 IS-900 systems in the field today with the majority of applications found in the military sector (flight simulators, weapon training systems, etc.), industry (oil & gas, automotive) and university research labs. Currently utilized in the Army AVCATT (Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer). Link Simulation and Training (Arlington, TX) has ordered helmet tracking systems for use in flight simulator programs for: the U.S. Navy F/A-18C Distributed Mission Training System; the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard F-16s on the U.S. Air Force F-16 Aircrew Training Devices (ATD) Program; the U.S. Army Flight School XXI Simulation Services contract; and additional systems for the U.S. Army and Army National Guard AVCATT Program. Lockheed Martin uses the IS-900 for a helmet tracking system with the night vision goggle (NVG) capability on the U.S. Air Force's F-16 Mission Training Center (MTC) program. Boeing has integrated the IS-900 tracking system into the UK Apache, the U.S. Air Force F-15E, and the Korean Air Force F-15K flight simulator programs.
