Company Background

ViaSat (Nasdaq:VSAT), founded in 1986, manufactures broadband digital satellite telecommunications and other wireless networking and signal processing equipment for commercial and military markets. Some of ViaSat's products include satellite communication terminals, network security devices, tactical data radios, and communications simulators. By the end of FY 2004, ViaSat's annual revenues had grown to over $346 million and employment to 1,000+ employees. INC, Forbes, BusinessWeek, and Fortune Small Business have recognized ViaSat's superior performance by including them on their lists of successful growth companies.

Innovative Technology Developed

ViaSat views Demand Assignment Multiple Access (DAMA) networking as its most significant innovation. Two Air Force SBIR phase II awards in 1991 for 5 and 25 kHz UHF SATCOM DAMA modems provided credibility and money to exploit this DAMA Networking technology for use by all the services as well as our international partners. This development has resulted in an ongoing product line providing satellite terminal equipment for ships, aircraft, ground vehicles, manpacks, ground stations, and missiles.

DoD Implementation and Commercialization Summary

UHF SATCOM DAMA Modems formed the basis for a product line that now includes full terminals. Over 15,000 modem modules have been embedded in the AN/PSC 5 UHF Satcom Manpack Radio, another 1,800 stand alone modems have been extensively used on ships and aircraft to the extent that every UHF Satcom capable ship in the US Navy uses a ViaSat MD 1324 modem. The modem software development also led to the development of the network control software installation of the UHF Satcom DAMA Network Control System at four sites providing worldwide coverage. Single and four channel radios, a Trainer/Simulator and Network Controllers have also been derived from this early innovative application of DAMA networking.

In the commercial arena, ViaSat produces innovative satellite and other wireless communication products that enable fast, secure, and efficient communications to any location. ViaSat has a full line of VSAT products for data and voice applications, and is a market leader in Ku and Ka-band satellite systems, from user terminals to large gateways. Underlying the networking capabilities in many of these products is the DAMA Networking techniques first pioneered in the UHF Satcom DAMA modems developed under the SBIR program. ViaSat's commercial business now makes up half of the total annual revenue for the company.
