ViaSat (Nasdaq:VSAT), founded in 1986, manufactures broadband digital satellite telecommunications and other wireless networking and signal processing equipment for commercial and military markets. Some of ViaSat's products include network security devices, tactical data radios, and communications simulators. By the end of FY 2005, ViaSat's annual revenues had grown to over $346 million and employment to 964 employees. INC, Forbes, BusinessWeek, and Fortune Small Business have recognized ViaSat's superior performance by including them on their lists of successful growth companies.
ViaSat's first SBIR Phase I contract was from the Navy for the Communication Environment Simulator (CES), a technology that has evolved into a state-of-the-art simulator for testing the F-22 Fighter Aircraft avionic systems and has also resulted in several spin-off programs including a new highly advanced simulator for the Joint Strike Fighter. The CES system can accurately and quickly simulate information communications during air combat situations, not only between various DoD component systems but also among the allies. ViaSat's system can be used during the development stage including integration and qualification, saving costs by avoiding the need to make corrections later in the development cycle. It allows the DoD and allies to integrate, test, evaluate, and train with communication, navigation, and Identification Friend-or-Foe systems to ensure performance thereby reducing flight test time for both Technical Evaluation as well as Operational Evaluation.
The Navy and Air Force have used this system to ensure aircraft system performance in support of combat operations including Desert Storm, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraqi Freedom. The DoD, Lockheed Martin, and GTE, Inc. have awarded ViaSat more than $60M for the CES technology with a majority of the funding from the Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program Office. Additional DoD support as well as ViaSat Internal Research & Development funds is being applied to look at new markets and commercial applications. The areas being explored for this technology include cellular telephony network testing, satellite and complex network protocol testing, SIGINT/ELINT system integration & Test, and weapon/avionic system training and mission rehearsal.
